Sound Masking
What is Sound Masking?
Sound masking is the balance of Absorbing, Blocking or Covering sound. Also known as the ABC’s of sound.
How does sound masking work?
Adding sound to a space actually makes the space seem quieter. It sounds counter-intuitive but it’s true. This is because the added sound reduces the intelligibility of human speech. Sound masking is an ambient sound, similar to the sound of airflow, that’s specifically engineered to the frequency of human speech. Sound masking does not cancel sound or eliminate all speech noise in an environment; it simply reduces how far away conversations can be heard and understood by others.
4 Reasons Why You Need Sound Masking
1 – Protecting your customers
Customer information is very important to customer satisfaction and your company’s reputation. Sound masking can help reduce the risk of breaches by reducing the intelligibility of speech and reducing the risk of customer phone conversations being overheard.
2 – Protecting yourself
We often have casual conversations with coworkers that we think won’t leave the office. Just as your coworkers may pick up on your conversations with your customers, your customers can also pick up on the conversations you may have with your coworkers. Sound masking can reduce the risk of customers listening to your conversations by reducing the level of sound.
3 – Privacy
Sometimes meetings are meant to be private. Maybe there is a change in the company, someone is being let go or there is a financial review. Sound masking can help keep those private meetings private. Sound masking targets the unintended listener making the speech of the speaker in the private meeting less clear.
4 – Productivity
Staff who deal with the constant noise distractions all day long are much less likely to get as much work done as a worker in a sound masked environment. Think about how often you are distracted at work from conversations, and then how long it takes to get focused again. Sound masking can reduce the amount of noise distractions significantly.
